Australian Seeding Contractor Rates 2025-2026: A State-by-State Guide
Winter crop seeding is one of the most critical operations on Australian farms. Get it wrong — wrong depth, wrong timing, wrong rate — and the season's potential is compromised before a single shoot emerges. That's why choosing the right seeding contractor is about more than just the hourly rate on the invoice.
This guide provides a state-by-state breakdown of indicative seeding contractor rates for 2025-2026, explains what drives pricing, and sets out how to compare quotes fairly.
Understanding Seeding Equipment
Seeding contractors typically operate one of three main equipment types:
- Air Seeders — Pneumatic delivery with tynes or discs. Most common for broadacre cereals and canola. Rates vary by working width (12m, 18m, 24m+).
- Box Drills — Gravity-fed seed boxes with tynes. Simpler equipment, typically lower hourly rates, suited to smaller or mixed operations.
- Precision Planters — Row-crop equipment for canola, pulses, and high-value crops. Higher rates per hour but superior placement accuracy.

What Moves the Number in 2025-2026
- Fuel. Seeding is fuel-intensive. Diesel prices through 2025-2026 have been elevated, and most contractors have adjusted base rates or applied fuel levies accordingly.
- Equipment size. Larger rigs cost more per hour but cover more ground. The $/hectare cost is often lower with bigger equipment, which is why WA operators run the widest machines.
- Soil and working speed. Heavy soils, rocky paddocks, or steep country slow the rig down and increase wear. Contractors price for the conditions they expect.
- Seasonal pressure. When the rain window opens and everyone needs to seed the same week, rates can spike. Booking early is the single best way to lock in competitive pricing.
- Reputation and reliability. Contractors with a track record of showing up on time and getting the depth right charge a premium — and many farmers find it's worth every dollar.
How to Compare Quotes Fairly
When you're gathering quotes, make sure you're comparing apples with apples:
- Confirm the equipment type and working width
- Check whether the rate includes the tractor, seeder, and operator
- Ask about setup time, travel between paddocks, and any call-out fees
- Confirm whether the rate applies to weekends or public holidays
- Understand what happens if weather interrupts the operation
Two or three written quotes is a reasonable benchmark — not to grind contractors down, but to ensure you understand the market rate for your specific situation.
